Painting water in motion has to be one of the most intimidating aspects of landscape painting for beginners and intermediate painters alike. How do you alternate foam, reflections, and transparency without making it look like chalk-marks, smudges, and mud?
An instructional video from a master will wash away those fears. Immerse yourself in the traditional methods (and the pure gold short-cut techniques!) that take the mystery out of painting water with these master teaching-artist videos.
KATHLEEN HUDSON: WATERFALL SECRETS

Kathleen B. Hudson’s waterfalls aren’t like photographs – they’re vivid studies in elegant form, dynamic composition, and above all lush, unexpected color – deep greens, electric violets, iridescent rainbow effects and sun-gilded foam.
Kathleen emphasizes dynamic light and atmosphere in her paintings and her teaching. Katheleen moved from her native Kentucky to Boston in the fall of 2005 to begin an undergraduate degree at Harvard University, where she painted, studied mountain travel narratives, and led backpacking trips for fellow students. She now lives with her family in Colorado Springs, Colorado. When she’s not outside painting from life, you can find her in the studio creating larger-scale landscapes, many of them water and waterfalls.
“You’re not creating a portrait of a waterfall, you’re creating a dynamic light and dark composition … and you can get creative with it.”
— Kathleen Hudson
If your painting would benefit from learning joyful, bold brushwork: pre-mixing piles of paint and laying color down with confidence on an underpainting where all the composition and drawing problems have already been solved, then download Kathleen’s video here.
SHUANG LI: FEARLESS WATERSCAPES

Painting water can feel like learning to speak a new language. It’s unnatural, confusing, and what seems simple just isn’t. You see, water has a language all its own, and if you don’t understand it, you’ll never be able to harness the beauty and the power of it in your paintings.

Welcome to Fearless Waterscapes with Shuang Li, a video workshop that will help you become fluent in the unique language of painting water.
Shuang opens your eyes to a different way of looking at water. You’ll discover that unlike other subjects, you can’t translate water directly from a photo to a painting; you have to first learn the language. Shuang shows you how working from multiple reference photos helps you capture the true emotion of water.
With Shuang’s help, you’ll unlock the secrets of reflection: how different types of water react differently to the objects around them. You’ll explore the various ways to approach flat water and moving water. You’ll discover a way to capture the sparkle of moving water every single time. And you’ll uncover techniques for creating wet effects on rocks and the sense of water spilling over objects to create more energy and interest.

CHARLIE HUNTER: RULE BREAKING LANDSCAPES

Charlie Hunter enjoys a very successful career despite being a maverick, DIY, take-no-prisoners breed of painter. His Tonalist paintings break many of the rules of Tonalism to make his viewers sense a deep and soulful relationship with the contemporary American landscape. Despite the strong sense of suggested meaning and mystery in his work, Charlie’s a very down to earth, casual teacher who doesn’t take himself too seriously – which makes learning from him not only effortless but actually a blast.
Watch with a smile on your face as Charlie:
- Wields a sword brush like a swashbuckling pirate
- Strategically uses color so that value does the heavy lifting (is there more than just murky brown?)
- Avoids stepping in zebra poop (yes, he’ll explain)
- Applies cool marks with interesting tools, creating amazing effects that people can’t seem to figure out on their own (make a list for a trip to the hardware store!)
And you’ll get to see Charlie’s signature moves:
- The “Drink Coffee and Go ‘Hmmmmm’” technique
- The “You are So Stupid” maneuver
- His “If You Can’t Dazzle Them With Brilliance, Then Baffle Them With BS” routine
