Previously, we enjoyed running down the most consistently inspiring, informative, and entertaining art and art history sites we could find on the Web. Including contributions from our readers, you can read those articles here and here.

In this roundup, we’ve gathered the mainstream contemporary art NEWS sites – where to go to get a sense of what the Big City Slickers in the Grand Global Art Market are getting up to. You may not aspire to anything you encounter here, but just seeing what’s going on out there can be fun, laughable, inspiring, and appalling, sometimes all at once. As artists, everything’s grist for our mills, right?

Depending on your idea of what makes for good art, your mileage may vary, but these are the “best” mainstream go-to spots for getting a sense and keeping tabs on the global art world in 2024. In alphabetical order …

1. Art & Object

https://www.artandobject.com

This is the go-to site for up-to-the-minute news about current shows as well as historical and contemporary art and trends. It’s not a great guide to all the must-see shows and where to see them – it’s too random for that. But it’s awesome for getting a sense of “what’s going on” in front of and behind the scenes of the work-a-day world of art and museums in the U.S. and abroad. Leads with interesting tidbits of art history, also has international news and exhibition roundup (press releases).

2. ArtNet

www.artnet.com

This one is solely about auctions, galleries, and buying and selling art. It’s more of a tool for collectors than primarily a news site, but it’s truly up to the minute, and a lot of people do use it for the latest news.

3. ArtForum

www.artforum.com

This is one of the oldest and most well-respected art magazines running. Welcome to the splashy, supercharged, serious, oxygen-deprived world of contemporary art and theory.

4. ArtNews

www.artnews.com

Like the tagline says, – the leading source for Art News and Art Event Coverage. Another venerable, excellent source for up to date goings-on in the Art World.

5. The Brooklyn Rail

Founded in October 2000 and currently published 10 times annually, the Brooklyn Rail provides an independent forum for arts, culture, and politics throughout New York City and beyond.

6. CULTURED

https://www.culturedmag.com

This one’s all about the Big Art World Stuff – Art Basel, the Venice Biennale, ‘Blue Chip’ artists and galleries, celebrities, up and comers, and big time international private collectors.

7. Hyperallergic

www.hyperallergic.com

Hyperallergic is a forum for serious, playful, and radical thinking about art in the world today. Founded in 2009, Hyperallergic is headquartered in Brooklyn, New York.
